Enhancing Cardiovascular Health and Preventing Cardiac Death in the Fire Service

This presentation will discuss cardiovascular health in the fire service. Data on cardiovascular risk factors among firefighters will be discussed. The cardiovascular strain of firefighting will we summarized based on live-fire studies, and we will provide a theoretical model that links the cardiovascular strain of firefighting with sudden cardiac events in firefighters with underlying cardiovascular disease.  We will present recommendations for enhanced cardiac screening to identify individuals with atherosclerotic heart disease or structural heart changes and discuss the role of physical fitness in preventing cardiovascular disease and enhancing performance.
